South Africa, 1968. "Pay Bad": Angry Nongqawuse Actors Quit. Euphonia Kata, Florence Mateta, and Nombeko Jumba are among the group of actors who have walked out of the star-studded musical play Nongqawuse, claiming they were underpaid. "We didn't insist on written contracts," they admitted, explaining that at times they were forced to live by their wits instead of receiving salaries. Producer Basil Somhlahlo has denied their claims, accusing some of the actors of being petty-minded. Over the past year, ten actors have left the show in different groups during its country-wide tours. These departures include the female lead, Anne Gxasheka, belly dancer Laura Yako, and the top-billed Malombo Jazz Makers.
