| Description | Mankunku Has The John Coltrane Touch. Mankunku Ngozi, the Cape Town saxophonist known for his John Coltrane-esque touch, was observed in a pensive moment at Mofolo Hall, performing with Early Mabuza, Lionel Pillay and Agrippa Magwaza. His initial impact on the Reef came at the 1963 Orlando Stadium Jazz Festival, where he played trumpet with his combo. The versatile 25-year-old Mankunku also played piano before dedicating himself to the saxophone. He has collaborated with Mabuza, Pillay, and Magwaza to record the album "Yakhal'nkomo".Mankunku mirrors the talent of the esteemed American pianist Errol Garner, as neither musician reads nor writes music. |
