| Description | South Africa, 1959. Sonny Pillay Tells How He Wooed And Won His Miriam. Sonny Pillay, also known as Shunmuga Athappa Pillay, recounted the early days of his relationship with Miriam Makeba, a courtship that became one of the most talked-about in South African entertainment. Their initial encounter was after Makeba performed in "African Jazz," a show arranged for violinist Yehudi Menuhin in Johannesburg. "I first met her after I had heard her sing", Sonny recalled. Their connection deepened in 1957 when Makeba joined the "African Jazz" group, allowing them to spend more time together. Their shared love for jazz played a significant role. They would relax at Sonny's parents' home, often choosing records together. Sonny fondly stated, "Our friendship and love is great." |
