Ghana, 1959. Ten Years of the CPP: Empowering Women in the Political Arena The Convention People's Party (CPP), born a decade ago from a period of strife and frustration, has not only been instrumental in Ghana's independence but has also championed the role of women in politics. In 1949, the people of the Gold Coast were restless for self-governance, eagerly awaiting a leader to guide their path. That leader emerged as Kwame Nkrumah, who, on June 12, 1949, launched the Convention People's Party and subsequently spearheaded the struggle that led to the formation of the state of Ghana. A significant figure in the party's journey toward inclusivity has been Madam Mary Mensah, the esteemed chairman of the women's section of the CPP. Madam Mensah has played a pivotal role in transforming societal perceptions, successfully encouraging women to embrace the idea that politics is not an exclusive domain for men. Her efforts have been crucial in bringing more women into the political fold, enriching the party and the nation with diverse perspectives and contributions.
