G.R. Naidoo

G.R. Naidoo (1928–1982) was a South African photojournalist and editor strongly associated with Drum, particularly through its Durban bureau and wider editorial infrastructure. Working across photography and newsroom leadership, he is remembered for human-centred reportage and for helping shape Drum’s regional coverage beyond Johannesburg – an important reminder that the magazine’s world was built through multiple local offices and networks. Naidoo later became Drum’s first editor-in-chief of colour, a landmark role made even more striking by apartheid’s hostility to non-white authority in prestigious public positions, and by the additional pressures of producing journalism under censorship and constraint. His career is also connected to Drum’s broader African footprint: some accounts note his involvement in establishing or supporting an East African office, often referenced in connection with Nairobi.
