Jürgen Schadeberg
Jürgen Schadeberg (1931–2020) was Drum’s chief photographer, picture editor, and art director in its formative years, and one of the primary architects of the magazine’s modern photo-essay style. Born in Berlin and trained in press photography, he moved to South Africa in 1950 and quickly became central to Drum’s visual strategy – sequencing images, shaping layouts, and mentoring photographers who would become foundational to South African photojournalism. Schadeberg photographed pivotal scenes of 1950s urban life and helped establish Drum’s signature mix of immediacy and design intelligence: strong portraits, street reportage, and narrative spreads that read as both journalism and cultural document. His legacy within the archive is twofold: the pictures he made, and the photographic culture he built – an editorial environment where young photographers learned craft, speed, and visual storytelling under real-world constraints.
