Ranjith Kally

Ranjith Kally (1925–2017) was a Durban-based photojournalist celebrated for decades of work documenting Black and Indian communities, social life, and political history in and around Durban. Largely self-taught, he moved into professional photography in the 1950s and worked for Golden City Post and Drum (with a short hiatus), producing a long, steady record that ranges from dance floors, street scenes, and intimate portraits to major political subjects. Kally photographed prominent anti-apartheid figures and is particularly noted for portraiture – images that balance formality with ease and proximity. His Durban work also captures a distinctive coastal urbanity: sport, music, community organisations, and everyday aspiration, alongside the constraints of apartheid governance. For researchers, Kally’s photographs are invaluable for their social detail – how people dressed, gathered, celebrated, and organised – while also anchoring key moments in public history.
